IT Executives: 5 Ways To Boost Your IT Team's Productivity Today

Productivity is often overlooked as a metric when measuring the performance of your IT team. While it may not be as measurable as other key performance indicators (KPIs), the productivity of your IT team is a significant factor in your bottom line.

There is a simple reason for that: IT teams are overwhelmed — facing several challenges concurrently, i.e.,

  • Keeping up with the daily onslaught of IT tickets
  • Updating LOB software
  • Hardware refresh
  • Migrating to a new OS/Server
  • Following a mandate from above to drive Digital Transformation and innovation

While your IT team is doing their best, they often have to get more work done with fewer hands — leaving the only option is to increase productivity. Alternatively, it's only a matter of time until you are facing anything from end user slowdowns/breakdowns to company-wide epidemics because your infrastructure is vulnerable to data breaches, malware attacks, and more.

Regardless of what your IT team is going through, the need for increasing their productivity is high. Here are five easy ways to increase productivity today:

Culture: The Single Biggest Roadblock on Your Way to Digital Transformation

Last week, we talked about how the role of the CIO is changing in pursuit of Digital Transformation and with it the key performance indicators to measure their effectiveness and contributions to the company's bottom line. But this tectonic shift isn't happening in a vacuum — it requires an organizational change, or culture shift, to be successful.

If this is something new to you, you aren't alone. At the recent Gartner Symposium 2018, many attendees were surprised to hear that a non-traditional technology topic was given top billing in several of the messages: the importance of corporate culture!

CIOs Must Follow A New Set Of Rules To Achieve Digital Transformation

As more organizations look to their CIO to lead the company's Digital Transformation efforts, the traditional role continues to evolve to fill this growing responsibility.

To get a clearer picture of what this shift will look like, Gartner recently surveyed over 3,160 CIOs from 98 countries representing approximately $13 trillion in revenue/public sector budgets and $277 billion in IT spending.

The message was loud and clear: 95 percent of these top-tier technologists expect their jobs to change significantly in the future due to digitization. As IT management is taking up less of the CIO's time, the executives see themselves as a change leader in addition to "assuming increased and broader responsibilities and capabilities".

4 Things You Should Know Before Investing Your Leftover IT Budget

Things are finally looking up on the IT budget horizon. According to the 2019 State of IT by Spiceworks, 56% of enterprises are planning to increase their IT budget in 2019 while 43% of organizations anticipate no change in their IT team's monetary plan! The majority of enterprises increased their IT dollars to invest in technology that counters ever-growing security concerns (about time!), to increase priority on their IT projects (Windows 7 losing support soon), and to upgrade outdated IT infrastructure.

While that is great news, some IT executives are scrambling this time of year to find worthy IT investments to tuck away any leftover money — because if you don't spend this year's budget, your boss won't see any reason to increase your budget next year. Ideally, this investment should either give them a head-start in a planned initiative or will afford them some breathing room in the coming months. But there are some things you need to consider before blowing the money:

IT Automation Isn't The Enemy For Service Integrators — It's An Opportunity

India's $150 billion big legacy IT services sector, which has been growing at a break-neck speed over the past two decades, has recently been struggling as its formerly cost-effective services were replaced by an even cheaper approach: intelligent IT automation solutions.

At its Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2017, the analyst firm announced this week that it expects that the costs of commodity services will be reduced by 15% to 25% annually until intelligent automation tools can be up to 65% less expensive than offshore-based staff! That is devastating news to the almost 4 million people currently employed in this sector, as about 70% of those jobs will be rendered irrelevant by automation in the next couple of years.
